Specifics of machine translation

Today it is difficult to imagine a large translation agency without modern technologies. To ensure more efficient translation process, Mankent uses special machine translation software, or so called CAT (Computer Aided Translation) tools. Of course the translations are still produced, edited and proofread by a team of experienced professionals. But using special machine translation software significantly increases quality and speeds up the process.

Let’s have a look at the translation process without going into too much detail. CAT tools such as Trados, SDLX, Transit and many others automatically identify similar sentences (segments). Then a CAT tool uses the translations of the sentences, which are absolutely identical. But that does not translate the entire text, so translators complete the translation of the remaining part. The software keeps a memory pool of previous translations so that it can compare texts. And these are the basics of machine translation.

Other types of software, such as Xbench, are used to check translations. They trace mistakes in texts that had been translated.

CAT tools:

  • Significantly reduce time and expenses when translating similar language constructions by using “translation memories” as well as similar and identical texts, which are kept in CAT databases;
  • Checking programmes speed up the search for grammatical and spelling mistakes, typos and many others;
  • These tools help to ensure translation consistency, especially in large documents, which is very important for customers.

These are technological novelties for our country, although translators in Europe have been using them since the sixties. Mankent has been following and successfully implementing the latest innovations in this sphere in its work.
